Music Video Examples (a critique) P1 (a-f)

Maroon 5 - Sugar

Song background:

"Sugar" is a song recorded by American pop rock band Maroon 5 for their fifth studio album, V (2014).

Music Style:

"Sugar" is a disco,funk-pop and soul song with a length of three minutes and fifty-six seconds. It features a wide range of instruments.

Editing:

In this music video,it was taken from many different places. The connection between these inside shooting was driving a car outside. This design idea works very well and it connect the whole videos.

Narrative:

A part from music, this is also a very interesting video. The video starts with the members of the band getting out of a place. After the speech he gets into the car and starts driving.A group of people get out of it, enter the building and start constructing a secret scene while the guests are surprised and start wondering what's happening. One guest stands up and starts arguing with the builders, while scenes are intercut with Maroon 5 driving around the city and Levine singing the lyrics of the song. The band gets in front of the hotel and sneaks into the building while the whole situation is happening; they are getting into the white sheets where the instruments are set in. As they are set they call the bride and the groom to stand in front of them and get the curtains down, when they see them the bride starts to scream happily, while the groom gets confused. After that they start smiling and all the guests get up and start dancing to the song.

Camera:

the camera was sitting in different places, and took video from different angles. It contains many different group people and took their changing in face and movement.

Jason Chen x J Rice - Billie Jean (Cover)

Song background:

"Billie Jean" is a song by American singer Michael Jackson. It is the second single from the singer's sixth solo album, Thriller (1982).This video shows two singers covered this classical music and took a music video.

Music Style:

The music style of Billie Jean by Michael Jackson* was Post-disco rhythm and blues funk dance-pop.However,these two singers has recompose the style of this song into a slow jazz style and without changing the lyric.

          *
The original music video by Michael Jackson.

Editing:

This music video is relatively simple and it's a bit boring. There were two singers in this video, and each of the singer took the video in different places (road and park). The synthesis of two video parts does show anything special and in the whole video, there is no Specially good effect but at 2:38,some parts of this song, the two singer sang together.Editor used both videos took from different places, one above and one underneath. The inosculation of sound from both singers was ok by editing.

Narrative:

Practically the whole video is these two singers' own performance, the video is no related with lyrics and there was no story in the video as well. The quality of music is good, but the video is boring, most viewers would just listen rather than watching.

Camera:

All the shots in the music video looks like took from a same position and the camera angles were very predictable. Therefore we can clearly understand how it was taken by a cameraman hold a camera move around the singer or follow the singer's movement. As a result, this made the video so boring. There was no variation, neither of shots or lenses; everything was very plain set and didn't do the video (or the song) any favours at all.

Mise-en-scene:

Costume -
Nothing really stood costume-wise,it's all normal day clothes, nothing particular glamourous.

Location -
One place might was the outside road of a singer house, and another place was a normal park with some plants background, nothing interesting.

Lighting -
The lighting in this video seems all from the sunlight, and the time looks like at nightfall, but it works

Props -
No props at all
